Evaluation of Transport Effect on the Performance of Stand-Up Pouch Packages for Liquid Products

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the transport on the performance of stand-up pouch packaging having aluminum foil in the structure, employed for packing liquid products. The stand-up pouch was submitted to transport simulation tests following the standards adopted in the ASTM D4728-95, during 4 hours. The intensity of the random vibration and the test time represent a traveled distance of approximately 2000km. Evaluations of the stand-up pouches were performed before and after the transport simulation employing optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, in order to elucidate the cause of possible damages in the structure of the packaging by the vibration request. The probable causes of the observed ruptures in the structure can be associated to the following factors: a) characteristics of the structure lamination; b) flexibility and elasticity characteristics of the aluminum foil; c) critical effect of the mechanical request of packaging due to its usage for a liquid product.
