Child’s health and COVID-19: Direct and indirect effects

Abstract

We sought to analyze how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected children directly and indirectly in a medium-sized municipality in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. This is a case study, with a quantitative-qualitative approach. Information from the 2020 e-SUS VE and SIVEP-flu systems for children residing in the municipality was analyzed; indicators related to the axes of the National Policy for Integral Attention to Children's Health, derived from various information systems and semi-structured interviews with managers and health professionals. Forty-eight confirmed cases of Covid-19 were identified, with only one of them reported with SARS evolving to cure. There was an increase in the number of notifications of cases of violence against children and a reduction in health monitoring in the number of children registered in the Bolsa Família program. It was possible to identify the effects of the pandemic on the organization of health care in the municipality, as well as the strategies adopted for the continuity of care for children, such as remote care and intensification of home visits. This is expected to contribute to the implementation of the actions provided for in the strategic axes of the PNAISC, during and after the Covid-19 pandemic.
