Armed violence and repercussions on the daily work of Family Health Strategy professionals

Abstract

In some Brazilian regions, the daily life of health professionals is often crossed by episodes of armed violence, with consequences for the organization of work. Objective: to analyze the repercussions of armed violence (AV) in the daily work of ESF professionals and their perceptions about the institutional strategy of Safer Access (SA). Method: Qualitative research with interviews (semi-structured script) with fifteen professionals from an ESF health unit in Rio de Janeiro, from October 2019 to January 2020. Through oral history, we asked about the daily work, the difficulties and perceptions about the AV and the implementation of the SA. Results: Interruptions in health care activities, such as home visits and other external visits; the closure of the unit; users' demand for other health services; increase in the number of visits to the population with health problems related to the repercussions of VA. As protection strategies for professionals, we found the implementation of the AMS, which was evaluated positively, and the use of social networks (WhatsApp) for communication between professionals about the territory in which they work. Conclusion: We emphasize the need for public policy actions that effectively guarantee the safety of the population and health professionals.
