Sexuality and stigma in health: an analysis of the pathologization of sexual diversity in the discourses of primary care professionals

Abstract

We investigated stigmatizing content in the discourse of doctors and nurses about the health of the LGBTT population in 32 basic health units in the Midwest and Northeast of Brazil. Based on the notions of scientia sexualis in Foucault and stigma in Goffman, we analyze the influence of the pathologization of sexuality on the rationality of these professionals, as generators of stigmatizing discourses and postures that interfere in the quality of healthcare in this population. The result allowed us to verify that, for the interviewees, the identity of the members of the LGBTT population is linked to the concept of a risk group, understood as a condition that causes illness and mental disorders, in addition to being associated with morally reprehensible behavior. The study points to the need for innovative processes in professional training that seek to problematize the structuring rationality of the stigmatizing process, with a view to qualifying care.
