From the policy propositions to the practices of the services: are there innovations in the Psychosocial Care Centers - Alcohol and Drugs?

Abstract

The Psychosocial Care Centers - Alcohol and Drugs (Caps AD) offer care in the Unified Health System for people with problems caused by drug use, based on innovations associated to the inclusion of psychosocial care and harm reduction in their conception of care. We carried out a qualitative research to understand how the practices of these services have been done, as well as the logic of the care they adopt, doing participant observation, semi structured interviews with managers, focal groups with users, family members and workers in three Caps AD in the city of Belo Horizonte-MG, Brazil. We noticed that these services prioritize practices that produce welcoming, bonds and attention to the health issues. They adopt harm reduction, psychosocial care and care as treatment logic. They perform this care with open services, but with little articulation with community and territorial resources. The research allowed us to understand that the Caps AD perform coherent practices with the proposed innovations, which seek to extend the life chances of people who use drugs.
