The state of the art in the elderly care: diagnosis of scientific production in nursing

This paper aims to identify in the summaries of scientific research woks, how the elderly care has been addressed, and to discuss the care portrayed in these studies. This is a bibliographical, quantitative study conducted in 53 abstracts addressing elderly care, published between 1993 to 2005 and indexed Lilacs, MEDLINE, and Capes. As a result, we observed that elderly care is addressed from various aspects, especially the "family caregiver at home," the need to invest in "professional training / qualification", the importance of the "nurse's role" and the applicability the "trans-cultural theory" in elderly care. Evidence from this study suggests measures necessary and appropriate to the moment of transition which we live, involving the pressing need for investment in the professional qualification of workers who care for these clients and the knowledge and enlightenment of the general population on issues related to aging.
