Psychologists in Brazil: notes about their professionalization process

This paper analyses the professionalization process of psychology in Brazil. It utilizes the sociology of professions as theoretical reference and makes a bibliographical revision of the Brazilian psychology history. It presents a proposal of periodization about the history of this profession, which is divided in three moments: pre-professional (1833-1890), professionalization (1890/1906) and professional (1975−). In the first place, there were many psychology's knowledges. In a second moment, psychology began to be organized through research institutes, universities, associations and professional laws. Finally, the profession, already established and recognized, started to suffer strong social and economical alterations and interprofessional disputes.
