Theoretical issues and empirical findings on recent studies concerning the impact of Down syndrome on the family and, especially, on the parents, are examined. The reviewed literature shows that the birth of a child with Down syndrome has a strong impact on the family, especially on parents, and can generate stress, difficulties in adaptation and family restrictions. On the other hand, some fathers and mothers report a positive vision of this coexistence with their children, highlighting synchronic interactions with them, as well as good adaptation to the demands and the required care. The existence of few studies involving the father in this context is stressed, as well as the importance of programs that help fathers and mothers in their adaptation process to the child.
