The Use of Psychological Tests: Formation, Evaluation and Criteria of Restriction

Abstract

Psychological tests are highly important in the psychological practice, being essential in the process of psychological assessment (PA). Considering the current social, cultural, and political context of PA in Brazil, this article aims to discuss the differences in PA Psychology formation, the evaluation and verification of psychological tests quality, as well as restrictions regarding its use in different countries. A comparative analysis shows that the existing evaluation system in Brazil (SATESPI) leveraged advances to the field, but the formation of the psychologist within this field still implies some deficiencies. Regarding restrictions, this work questions how we could implement changes, valuing the competence for applying the instruments rather than the title of psychologist. As in other countries, we should create crediting processes for PA psychology performance, so that only trained professionals could conduct PA processes. In conclusion, in a country such as Brazil, with so many regional inequalities, the issue of formation in Psychology, and specifically in PA, must be constantly revisited.
