SOCIAL LIBRARIANSHIP AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING: REFLECTIONS AND ANALYSIS OF PROFESSIONAL COURSE PROGRAMS IN BRAZIL

ABSTRACT

This article considers the importance of the contribution of professional training for the development librarians’ consciousness of the social needs of the different environments in which they are expected to act. During their courses they should acquire information and the capacity to be able to contribute to the overcoming of the great social inequalities in the country. Two basic principles of social librarianship are here presented and discussed as basic instruments for acquiring this consciousness and capacity: information mediation and information appropriation. As empirical evidence of attention to social librarianship during professional training, two Brazilian librarianship courses programs are analyzed here, considering their emphasis to university extension activities and to school libraries. The analyzes presented indicate that both courses offer opportunities in social librarianship training, but do not yet indicate full attention to the theme.
