This article offers some thoughts on the role of the public library and the brazilian education today, regarding the formation of readers. This is an issue that continues being current and relevant, bearing in mind two realities of difficult interrelationship: the permanence of high levels of illiteracy in Brazil and the new ways of reading and communicating that came with the digital revolution. The role of the mediator of reading is also discussed in this paper.
