Bibliographies of the eighteenth century and the concepts of rare book

Abstract

This article deals with Bibliophilia in Europe, especially since the modern era and the role of bibliographies specialized in rare books in the formation of private libraries. Bibliophilia and Bibliography are approached from Cultural History and thus the analysis of bibliographies distances themselves from the practical-operational function of the use of bibliographic repertoires, that is, only related to the restricted use to locate information about a particular document. This perspective aims to understand, in addition to the items listed, the possible vestiges of the practices and representations of Bibliophilia that are used to construct the concepts of the rare book, in the eighteenth century, which may constitute the first systematizations of the "Theory of Rarity". The bibliography analyzed was the Catalogvs historico-critiques librarvm rariorvm, by the German Johannis Vogt, due to his practices of compilation of rare book concepts published in bibliographies in Europe during the eighteenth century.
