The role of museological institutions in the information and knowledge society

This article considers the role of museological institutions within the current society of information/ and knowledge. It highlights the importance of these centres of memory and culture in the construction of human knowledge, and goes on to look at how they may contribute to encouraging and stimulating learning through new technologies. It will discuss the concept of digital heritage and the idea of virtual exhibition, with the aim of showing how museums can use technological and information mechanisms to uphold the collective memory. It will also reflect on the evolution of museums, both with regard to the organisation of information, and its dissemination in the current society of information and knowledge.
