Theory and practice in subject cataloging: the systematic nature of the process in the context of university libraries by professional perspective

The subjective nature of cataloguing of subject prints certain peculiarities in the actions of professionals who conduct the activity in specific areas. Thus, it showns the necessity of studies that surround the actions of the subject catalogers, anchored in the reality of the context of university libraries, to obtain the influential factors of professional knowing and doing. Therefore, we analyze the professional knowledge about the systematic process of cataloging sociocognitive perspective on the subject. Therefore, it applies the technique of Verbal Protocol Group catalogers with three distinct subjects of academic libraries in the state of São Paulo in order to know the reality of the subject cataloging process by professional perspective. The results indicate the need for methodological tools that provide sustainability to the subject cataloging practice in the context of university libraries.
