Labor renormalizations and workplace infidelities in the glass industry: an ergological analysis

Abstract

Based on an ergological approach to labor relations, this article analyzes the “dramatics” involved in the processes of renormalization in work situations in a glass processing company. For data analysis, a methodological triangulation was performed through documentary survey, direct observation of work, and semi-structured interviews. We used content analysis, with categories-defined post analysis, namely: (1) In addition to prescription: the use of self at work and recognition; (2) Hierarchical management: the lack of valorization of workers’ knowledge; and (3) Dramatics: in pursuit of production goals and losses. Analysis showed that the management of uses of the self by operators from the three production lines renormalize their activities based on individual values and the environment and on the collective knowledge of this workplace. Such renormalizations involve dramatic, due to the confrontations experienced in the pursuit of the goals of production and reduction of procedural losses in an infidel environment, where the organization of work is guided by hierarchical values, with the valuation of compliance with orders involved in poor communication between levels or the recognition of workers’ knowledge.
