Based on a Gramscian framework, this article discusses the role of the modern media in society. The article claims that the autonomy of the media must be carefully observed face to thein links with the state and the dominant classes, particulary in the Brazilian case, which is slightly analysed. The media are seen as key components of the construction and reconstruction of hegemony.
