“People’s Voice”: Space and History in Two Poems by Drummond

ABSTRACT

From a letter written by Manuel Bandeira in 1931, Drummond disembowels two key poems published in Sentimento do mundo, in which the social space of Rio de Janeiro is converted into an aesthetic problem. By intertwining the historical tensions embedded in the landscape with the configuration of the poetic voice,“Privilégio do mar” and “Noturno à janela do apartamento” develop politicization strategies attentive to both the emergence of class struggle and the oppressive situation of the Estado Novo regime.
