More Lenient with Women? The Flow of Drug Trafficking Processing in a Brazilian City

ABSTRACT

Focal concerns theory was applied as a framework for analyzing a sample of criminal cases closed between 2007 and 2017 and interviews with legal operators who worked in the drug courts. The results indicate that women are treated more severely, contrary to what was observed in the United States. In Belo Horizonte, they are more susceptible to pretrial detention, an “immediate conviction”, as stated by the interviewees.
