The occurrence of Salmonella in limph nodes of seemingly normal swine slaughtered at the abattoir of Santa Cruz, Rio de janeiro, GB

A research was realized about the presence of Salmonella in the pre-scapular, pre-femoral and mesenteric lymph nodes of fifty nine apparently normal swine, butchered in the Santa Cruz slaughterhouse, Rio de Janeiro, GB. One hundred seventy seven lymph nodes was examinated which allowed the isolation of twenty seven strains of Salmonella, distributed as follow: 14 (51,84%) of mesenteric; 8 (29,62%) of pre-femoral and 5 (18,51%) of pre-scapular lymph nodes. The serological type showed four different serotypes of Salmonella enteritidis distributed in two groups, with predominance of B somatic group (serotype Typhimurium) for the mesenteric lymph nodes and three differents serotypes distributed in three groups with predominance of El somatic group (serotype Anatum), for the pre-scapular and pre-femoral lymph nodes. The isolation of Salmonella from prescapular and pre-femoral lymph nodes which remains in the carcasses, in 8,4% of the apparently normal swine examinated, suggested that the above mentioned nodes be removed from swine carcasses before all of them passed fit for human consumption.
