“In those days no one heard of missing people”: family and maternity in missing person activism in Brazil

Abstract

In this article I analyze the historical conditions for the emergence of activism in the biography of three mothers engaged with missing persons Brazil. Through semi-structured interviews, bibliographic research and documentary research in the Jornal do Brasil, I explore the conditions for the possibility of the activism of mothers who seek out their missing family members in Brazil. I emphasize how the emergence of activism was linked to the construction of a family drama through key strategic actors such as the media and other movements associated with the denunciation of urban violence in Rio de Janeiro.
