MACHADO DE ASSIS BETWEEN BRAZIL AND PORTUGAL

Abstract

The relationships between Machado de Assis and the Portuguese literary world can be divided in three phases: the first, until the first half of the 1870s, is characterized by cordiality and the attempt, by Machado de Assis, to insert himself in the Lusitanian system through the publication of texts, especially in the city of Porto. The second phase was marked by the debate between him and Eça de Queirós, motivated by the novels O crime do padre Amaro and O primo Basílio. The third phase, since the end of the 20th century, presents Machado de Assis as the inspiration for literary creations of particular quality, such as Helder Macedo's novel Pedro e Paula and Maria Velho da Costa's play Madame.
