Abstract
This paper evaluates the first literary review published by Machado de Assis in 1862 - "Flores e frutos. Poesias por Bruno Seabra. 1862. Garnier, editor." ("Flowers and fruits. Poems by Bruno Seabra. 1862. Garnier, editor.") -, and seeks to situate it in the writer's trajectory, as well as to assess its significance. With the publication of this critical text, the writer gave clear signs of migration from the field of journalism to literature.
