THE PERFECT ORATOR BY MACHADO DE ASSIS

Abstract

In this essay, we examine Machado de Assis's prose, with the aim to discuss his affiliation with various authors located between Antiquity and the Modern era, such as Aristotle, Cicero, Lucian, and Fernão Mendes Pinto. In addition to restoring the intertexts, we intend to make a dialogical analysis and interpretation of these works, suggesting the application of rhetorical precepts in the composition of narrators and characters endowed with oratory competence.
