OTHERNESS IN REFLECTIONS: A TESSITURE BETWEEN “O ESPELHO” BY ASSIS AND “O LODO” BY RUBIÃO

Abstract

This article investigates the relations of otherness present in the short stories “O espelho”, by Machado de Assis, and “O lodo”, by Murilo Rubião. The hypothesis of the article is articulated around the idea that the structure of the myself-other dyad is present in both works. However, each author worked in a unique way, given the historical-social context, the profound changes in culture and the problematization of the subject that each one of them experienced. Research results point to a very particular texture between the stories, often bringing them closer, sometimes distancing them, in terms of structure, theme, narrative focus and outcome.
