This article aims at discussing the short story "Evolução", published by Machado de Assis in the newspaper Gazeta de Notícias, in 1884, and later in the book Relíquias de casa velha, in 1906. Our interpretation stems from the idea that the text, written with a suitable theme for this newspaper, shows a discussion about political practices in Brazil at that time, with the ironic and critical eye of the author.
