Abstract
We shall try to discuss the reflections proposed by Richard M. Morse and Fernando Henrique Cardoso in a comparative perspective, emphasizing the developments that the theme of dependency assumes in their interpretations about Brazil and Latin America. Using an analytical key that links the authors’ later thesis to their earlier reflections, we highlight Morse and Cardoso’s initial interest in the industrialization and urbanization of São Paulo. A comparative perspective shows the divergent directions each author assume once they approach the problem of dependency, which took a central role in the Latin American social thought from the 1960s to the 1970s.
