ABSTRACT
This paper discusses the role of Christian Thomasius as a pioneer of the Aufklärung and the specific position of the latter in the broader context of the Enlightenment. Departing from a review of recent studies on the Enlightenment, this paper will draw an interpretative guideline to assess the political and philosophical peculiarity of the Aufklärung.
