Correlation between the clinical and histologic data of oral squamous cell carcinoma from Instituto Maranhense de Oncologia Aldenora Bello, in São Luís, MA, Brazil

The aim of this study was to investigate the existence of correlation between the clinical and histopathological data of oral squamous cell carcinoma. A total of 90 cases of patients diagnosed with oral squamous cell carcinoma were selected from the slide archives of Instituto Maranhense de Oncologia Aldenora Bello (São Luís, MA, Brazil). Pearson’s correlation test was applied and did not reveal a statistically significant correlation (r = 0.095; p = 0.375) between TNM clinical classification and histologic malignancy grading, which was defined by Wahi (1971) and published by the World Health Organization (WHO). There was a significant correlation between the histologic malignancy grading and the size of the primary tumor as a clinical parameter (r = 0.229; p = 0.03).
