The ground level of the news industry: contribution towards a political economy of the newsmaking praxis

There is a tradition in Journalism studies which focuses on how the daily newspaper is the result of social interactions as well as of micro policies that affect such practices. Currently, this scenario has been complexified both by the introduction of Communication technologies that impacted all stages of the newsmaking process (from investigation to consumption) as well as its legal formalization. In this theoretical paper, the objective is to present three points for discussion about the current configuration of the professional practice of Journalism in Brazil, namely: a) the debate on the regulation of the formation and practice of professional Journalism, b) the context of labor relations in the Journalism labor market; c) the crisis of the narrative and the social role of the journalist, considering cultural, economic, political and technological issues. That the uncertainties on the definition of standards for Journalism as a labor category, the weakening of professional links between journalists and Newspaper companies, as well as the current crisis of the narrative points out for a representation of contemporary Journalism in Brazil as an open field of disputes, with many possibilities to be explored.
