Resumo: O presente artigo discute a (re)construção das fronteiras entre os humanos e os animais ao longo dos séculos XIX e XX. Nos séculos XVII e XVIII, o ser humano era visto como fundamentalmente distinto da natureza através da política, sociedade e trabalho, sendo frequentemente comparado então aos insetos sociais. Com a revolução darwiniana no século XIX e a classificação filogenética dos seres vivos, o ser humano foi “primatizado”, e assim a humanidade passaria a ser uma consequência da inteligência gerada pelo alto desenvolvimento do sistema nervoso. Atualmente, quando se quer questionar as fronteiras entre o humano e o animal, viram-se os holofotes para outros seres como chimpanzés e golfinhos. Assim, através de uma revisão bibliográfica, este artigo busca explorar um aparente contraste histórico entre os seres a serem comparados aos humanos - dos insetos sociais aos chamados “mamíferos superiores” - bem como suas implicações políticas e bioéticas.

Abstract: The present article discusses the (re)construction of the boundaries between humans and animals along the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries. In the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, the human being was viewed as fundamentally distinct from nature due to politics, society and work, and then usually compared to social insects. Along the Darwinian revolution in the nineteenth century and the phylogenetic classification of live beings, the human being was “primatized”, and humanity would be a consequence of the intelligence due to the high development of the nervous system. Nowadays, when one wants to question the boundaries between humans and animals, the lights are turned to other beings, such as chimpanzees and dolphins. In this sense, as a bibliographic review, this article aims to explore this historical contrast of comparison standards - from insect societies to “superior mammals” - as well, its political and bioethical consequences.

Resumo: A presença do ciborgue na contemporaneidade, como entendido pela bióloga e filósofa Donna Haraway em Antropologia do Ciborgue (2009), traz consigo um conjunto de signos que compõem nosso mundo. Dentre esses signos estão às operações transgênicas que o antropólogo e poeta Luís Quintais critica na obra Uma arte do degelo (2015) por meio do efeito performático da bio-arte. Porém, ao confrontarmos tal efeito com o conceito de arte disturbatória do filósofo Arthur Danto, presente na obra O descredenciamento filosófico da arte (2015), a ética oriunda da bio-arte como proposto por Quintais perde em vitalidade. Contudo, recorremos ao imaginário do escritor Fausto Fawcett na obra Favelost (2012) como forma de dialogar com os teóricos presentes nesta investigação a fim de se abrir perspectivas a novos mundos para o pós-humano.

Abstract: The presence of the cyborg in contemporary times, as understood by the biologist and philosopher Donna Haraway in Antropologia do Ciborgue (2009), brings with it a set of signs that make up our world. Among these signs are transgender operations that the anthropologist and poet Luís Quintais criticizes in the work Uma arte do degelo (2015) by means of the performative effect of bio-art. However, when we compare this effect with the concept of disturbatory art of the philosopher Arthur Danto, present in the work The Philosophical Disenfranchisement of Art (1986), the ethics of bio-art as proposed by Quintais weakens in vitality. However, this article resorts to imaginary of the writer Fausto Fawcett in the work Favelost (2012) as way of dialoguing with the theorists present in this research in order to open perspectives to new worlds for the post-human.

Abstract Cyborg and prosthetic technologies frame prominent posthumanist approaches to understanding the nature of race. But these frameworks struggle to accommodate the phenomena of racial passing and racial stationarity, and their posthumanist orientation blurs useful distinctions between racialized humans and their social contexts. We advocate, instead, a humanist approach to race, understanding racial hierarchy as an industrial technology. Our approach accommodates racial passing and stationarity. It integrates a wide array of research across disciplines. It also helpfully distinguishes among the grounds of racialization and conditions facilitating the impacts of such racialization.

Resumo Este ensaio pretende dissertar sobre o texto de ficção eletrônica de Richard Holeton - Frequently Asked Questions About “Hypertext” - publicado por N. Katherine Hayles na Eletronic Literature Collection (vol. 1, 2006), obra que fornece um rico material para considerações “pós-humanistas” sobre o futuro da poesia como um locus privilegiado de expressão anímica. Trata-se de uma releitura irônica de um texto parodístico de autoria de Vladimir Nabokov: Pale Fire (1962). Ao contrário do que sugere o título, porém, o texto de Holeton não se apresenta como um ensaio acadêmico sobre a escrita digital, mas como um poema experimental sujeito aos mirabolantes exercícios analíticos de diversos críticos fictícios, praticantes de algumas linhas dos atualmente populares Estudos Culturais. A obra possibilita ao leitor uma reflexão bem-humorada sobre os perturbadores desdobramentos da escrita, da leitura e da produção de conhecimento na contemporaneidade.

Abstract This essay aims to analyse the electronic fiction text created by Richard Holeton - Frequently Asked Questions About "Hypertext" -, published by N. Katherine Hayles in the Electronic Literature Collection (vol. 1, 2006). As an ironic reference to another parodistic work created by Vladimir Nabokov: Pale Fire (1962), this text provides a rich material for a “posthumanist” reading about the future of poetry as an expression of the human soul. Contrary to what the title suggests, however, Holeton’s text is not presented as an academic essay on digital writing, but as an experimental poem subjected to the quaint approaches of several fictitious critics, practitioners of the analytical lines of the nowadays popular Cultural Studies. The text allows us a humorous reflection on the perturbing directions of reading, writing and the production of knowledge in contemporary world.

Resumo Neste ensaio, proponho pensar em possibilidades de leitura de obras literária que não se restrinjam à tradição hermenêutica e abram espaço para uma vivência afetiva da literatura, isto é, para seus efeitos sensoriais, perceptuais e emocionais. Para tanto, entendo que reflexões fundamentadas no comportamento e nas possibilidades de consciência animal possam ser um ponto de partida para se pensar a configuração de um espaço híbrido na consciência, em um imaginário somático e cinético que alargue a definição e os horizontes da representação literária.

Abstract In this essay, I aim to reflect upon possibilities of literary experiences that are not restricted to the hermeneutic tradition and thus provide space for an affective take on literature, namely through sensorial, perceptual and emotional effects. With that in mind, I propose that poetic elucubrations based on animal consciousness could be a starting point in the configuration of a hybrid conscious state, in a somatic and kinetic imaginary, which then might broaden both the notion and the horizons of literary representation.

Resumo: As obras O vendedor de Passados e Teoria geral do Esquecimento, de José Eduardo Agualusa, apresentam personagens animais e relações entre humanos e animais não-humanos que contrariam as teorias filosóficas e interpretativas tradicionais, possibilitando leituras que rompem com noções preestabelecidas pelas teorias de matriz estruturalista e cartesiana. Como sugeriu Donna Haraway, o ciborgue aparece como mito precisamente onde a fronteira entre o humano e o animal é transgredida, como se passa nas zonas de indiscernibilidade das personagens de Agualusa, que estabelecem uma (po)ética animal e, portanto, ciborgue. Este artigo tem como intuito trazer à discussão algumas dessas ocorrências animais - ou animots - nas duas obras em questão.

Abstract: The works The Book of Chameleons and General Theory of Oblivion, by José Eduardo Agualusa, present animal characters and relations between humans and non-human animals that go against traditional philosophical and interpretative theories, allowing perspectives that break with the notions created by the Cartesian and structuralist matrix theories. Donna Haraway suggested that the cyborg appears in myth precisely where the boundary between human and animal is transgressed, just as the indiscernibility lines created by Agualusa’s characters, which establish an animal (po)ethics and, therefore, cyborg. This paper aims to discuss some of these animal - or animots - occurences in Agualusa’s works.

Resumo Um número crescente de pesquisas sobre o humano tem tido a atenção voltada para trabalhos na área biotecnológica, em busca de uma compreensão contemporânea dos atributos humanos, tradicionalmente associados ao abstrato, ao filosófico. Não obstante seu emprego predominante e indiscutível imbricamento na área da geologia, o termo “antropoceno”, por sua vez, vem sendo usado com cada vez mais frequência por pesquisadores e profissionais das mais variadas áreas para destacar como a humanidade está mudando nosso planeta. Ao convocar o conceito de antropoceno para este trabalho, meu intuito é de sinalizar o momento não somente geológico mas histórico e cultural. A realidade subjacente ao conceito lança a humanidade em uma seara de incerteza tanto científica quanto discursiva. Com isso em mente, propõe-se discutir a cena humana (a antropo-cena) a partir da ficção especulativa, levando em conta o papel da linguagem e da representação na construção do (pós)humano, frente ao desastre, ao biopoder e à biopolítica.

Abstract: A growing body of research on the Human focuses on work being developed in the field if Biotechnology, in search of an understanding of contemporary human attributes traditionally associated with the abstract, with the philosophical. Notwithstanding its predominant employment and undisputed imbrication in the field of Geology, the concept of the Anthropocene, in its turn, is being increasingly used by researchers and professionals from a variety of fields to underscore how humanity is changing our planet. By deploying the concept, I wish to signal both the geological and the historical and cultural moment being experienced by humanity. The underlying reality behind the concept of the Athropocene leads us into both scientific and discursive uncertainty. With this in mind, this work proposes to discuss the human scene (the ‘anthropo-scene’) as represented in speculative fiction, taking into account the role of language and representation in the construction of the (post)human vis-à-vis disaster, biopower and biopolitics.

Resumo: O romance Stone, de autoria de Adam Roberts, é a narrativa em primeira pessoa de Ae, o único criminoso em uma utopia pós-humana na qual o uso da nanotecnologia levou a humanidade à plenitude. Nessa sociedade, Ae é um excluído. Um dia, porém, ele recebe uma proposta de liberdade e riqueza em troca de matar toda a população de um planeta. Ao aceitá-la, Ae deve tentar cumprir sua missão ao mesmo tempo em que se questiona e investiga quem o teria contratado. No conflito entre esse indivíduo desviante e a utopia, Stone examina os próprios limites dessa utopia, apoiada na ideia de fluxo e indefinição, e dos modelos de subjetividade que ela cria. A noção de utopia como um projeto social bem definido é trocada pela imagem de corpos utópicos, influenciados por tecnologias que põem em questão as definições de humano e pós-humano. Nessa rede de tensões e indefinições, levanta-se a possibilidade de que o indivíduo marginalizado e sociopata seria o único capaz de examinar de forma profunda a realidade num mundo anestesiado pelo conforto.

Abstract: Ae, the narrator-protagonist of the novel Stone, by Adam Roberts, is the only criminal in a post-human utopian society in which the use of nanotechnology has allowed humanity to reach its plenitude. Isolated from the rest of society, one day Ae is offered freedom and wealth if he agrees to kill the population of a whole planet. After accepting this offer, Ae must try to fulfil his mission at the same time that he questions himself and tries to discover who his employers are. In developing the conflict between this deviant individual and the utopia in which he lives, Stone examines the limits of the utopia itself, which is based on the idea of flux and indefiniteness. The novel also explores the models of subjectivity created in the context of this utopia. The notion of utopia as a well-defined social project is replaced by the image of utopian bodies, influenced by technologies that challenge the definitions of the human and of the post-human. In establishing this network of tensions and indefiniteness, the novel offers the possibility that the marginalized sociopath might be the only one capable of examining in depth the reality of a world anesthetized by its own comfort.

Resumo: O presente artigo busca discutir como as correntes transumanistas e pós-humanistas ressignificam o componente humano em distopias contemporâneas. Neste sentido, buscar-se-á cotejar as trilogias Divergente e A 5ª onda, duas narrativas sintomáticas do momento político e social atual do ocidente, porém distintas quanto às suas imputações filosóficas acerca dos ideais epistemológicos da transumanidade e da pós-humanidade. Para tal, este artigo utiliza-se das contribuições de Hayles (1999), Wolfe (2009), More e Vitta-More (2013) e Marks de Marques (2014). Este artigo justifica-se por contribuir com os estudos acerca do gênero distopia, os quais têm se destacado nas últimas décadas e têm tornado disponíveis novas ferramentas para melhor entender o gênero e as sociedades das quais ele se origina.

Abstract: This paper aims to discuss the way the philosophical currents of transhumanism and posthumanism re-signify the human component in contemporary dystopias. In this sense, we aim to compare the trilogies Divergent and The Fifth Wave, two narratives that are symptoms of the current Western political and social moment, but distinct in their philosophical imputations about the epistemological ideals of transhumanism and posthumanism. As such, this article is based on the works of Hayles (1999), Wolfe (2009), More e Vitta-More (2013) and Marks de Marques (2014). This work is justified to contribute with the studies about dystopia, which have stood out in recent decades and have made available new tools for dealing with the genre and the society in which it is originated.
