Gender and power relations in the context of the vulnerability of women to sexually transmitted disease

This study investigated gender and power relations in the context of the vulnerability of women to sexually transmitted diseases. We conducted a qualitative study with eight women of reproductive age with a history of sexually transmitted disease. The data were collected using structured interviews, which were analyzed using a method of thematic analysis proposed by Bardin. The women are drawn into a position of submission, reflecting the strong influence of gender on affective marital relationships, hampering dialogue and the negotiation of safe sex and contributing to lack of self-recognition as subjects of sexual and reproductive rights. It is therefore important to raise awareness among women using interventions that promote empowerment for the negotiation of safe sex, protagonism, and self-recognition as a subject sexual and reproductive rights.
