Fishing communities in a coastal region of the State of São Paulo: empowerment, health and quality of life

The aim of this study was to characterize the organization, conditions and health and quality of life needs of eight fishing communities in a coastal region of the State of São Paulo, and explore expectations and prospects in relation to the sustainability and continuity of the communities. We conducted a descriptive qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews with 17 community members. The data were analyzed using content analysis. The study demonstrates the adversities and barriers faced by artisanal fishers to achieving empowerment and maintaining dignified livelihoods. The findings also show the role played by health and illness in quality of life and that the valorization of the fishing communities is an important tool in the consolidation of policies geared towards this profession.
