A new species of Canistrum E. Morren (Bromeliaceae) from Brazil

A new species of Canistrum E. Morren (Bromeliaceae) from Bahia and Minas Gerais is described and illustrated. A brief history of the genera Canistrum and Wittrockia is presented showing the complex segregation between these two taxa, supporting the inclusion of the new species in the genus Canistrum. Canistrum flavipetalum is similar to C. cyathiforme (Vell.) Mez, both presenting a conspicuous scape with one or three bracts, but differs from each other by the yellow to orange petals, and rose to purple inflorescence bracts in C. cyathiforme, while in C. flavipetalum the bracts are green or whitish, sometimes reddish at apex and the petals are pale yellow with greenish base.

Bromelioideae; Wittrockia
