The genus Cordyline Comm. ex R.Br. (Asparagaceae Juss.) from Paraná State, Brazil

The aim of this study was to describe the species of Cordyline occurring in Paraná State, specifically Cordyline sellowiana Kunth, by analyzing specimens from several herbaria in the State. C. sellowiana is characterized by linear sessile leaves, terminal inflorescences and purple pedicellate flowers; apex of the sepals acuminate and apex of the petals obtuse. Collected in 26 municipalities of Paraná State, it occurs in the following types of vegetation: Estepe Ombrófila, Floresta Estacional Semidecidual Subxérica, Floresta Ombrófila Densa and Floresta Ombrófila Mista. Based on the criteria of IUCN Red List, the state of conservation of the species was defined into the category of least concern (LC). It is commonly known as uvarana, varana, guaraíva, or cordiline, and is used for animal and human nutrition, pharmacology, environmental restoration and as ornamental plant.
