Advances in the knowledge of the bryophytes from the Brazilian Pampa

ABSTRACT

Bryophytes remain one of the least explored plant groups within the Pampa biome, with only five bryofloristic studies and 124 species documented in the Flora and Funga of Brazil. This study aimed to compile existing information concerning the of bryophytes in the Pampa was to compile existing information on Pampa bryophytes as a starting point for floristic, taxonomic, ecological and conservation studies, among others, in addition to the development of a future checklist. Data were extracted from online databases, checklists, and recent publications, resulting in a comprehensive list of 318 species. This represents a substantial 256% diference in the number of species reported for the Pampa in the Flora and Funga of Brazil. The prevailing global distribution pattern observed was Neotropical. While eight species were found exclusively in the Brazilian Pampa, only Fissidens acacioides var. brevicostatus (Pursell et al.) Pursell of them was deemed endemic. Furthermore, seven species were identified as being at some level of threat. These findings underscore the necessity for further research to fully comprehend the actual species richness and to promote the conservation of this unique biome.
