Ipomoea L. (Convolvulaceae) in the Agreste Mesorregion of Paraíba State, northeast Brazil

ABSTRACT

Convolvulaceae is a cosmopolitan family belonging to the order Solanales, which covers about 1,880 species in 60 genera. Ipomoea L. is the most representative genus, with some 700 species worldwide. Considering the ecological and economic importance associated with the scarcity of studies on this genus, especially in Paraíba State, this study had the purpose of presenting the taxonomic survey of Ipomoea in the Agreste Mesorregion of Paraíba State, in northeastern Brazil. Twenty species were recorded, being I. decipiens and I. squamosa recorded for the first time in the study area, the latter also constituting a new record for the Caatinga vegetation. Descriptions, identification key, habitat and distribution data, phenology, additional comments and images of the species are provided.
