The paper examines how rumors about the recolonization from Brazil by the Portuguese kingdom, in the Rio de Janeiro, and rumors about liberals that intended to slave the browns, which spread in the province of Minas Gerais influenced the formation of public opinion and contributed to the end of the First Empire. The main conclusion is that the rumors in question showed the importance of ethnic and racial relations in politics, included blacks and browns in a feeling of what it meant to be Brazilian and divergent groups joined the Abdication in favor and against the so-called outrages imposed by the Portuguese.
