The Hegemony of the margins: the work of Jacques Le Goff at the beginning of the 21th Century

ABSTRACT

In 2014 the tribe of historians lost one of their leaders, Jacques Le Goff. An inspiring and controversial author, the French medievalist influenced not only the study of the Middle Ages, but also the historical discipline in general during the second half of the twentieth century. His legacy is certainly important, but the reflections of the last Le Goff have some specificities that deserve greater attention from their peers. This article, after presenting an overview of his professional and historiographical path, tries to outline the main aspects of the reception that his works produced during his last decade of life. At the end of our journey, the works of this medievalist will have led us to one of his final legacy: his contributions to an old discussion between experts and the ones who disseminate historical knowledge.
