Between the Field and the Village: devotion and sociability of slavery and liberty in the brotherhood of the Rosary of the Blacks of Taubaté - the XIX century

ABSTRACT

This article, based on the lack of research on the black brotherhoods constituted in the countryside, seeks to contribute with a brief analysis about the “Brotherhood of Black Men of the Brotherhood of the Rozario” of Taubaté, a city in the Paraíba Valley Paulista, which was transformed in the second half of the nineteenth century, together with Bananal, in support of the Brazilian imperial economy. Through the crossing of diverse sources, it was possible to make an effort to approach the brothers of the Rosário de Taubaté, identifying them in the plots of their owners, in the case of those enslaved, and also to note the participation of free and freedmen, whites and pardos in the inside the fellowship. The coexistence of Rosario’s blacks with a varied range of social types denotes the importance of the brotherhood as a strategic space for the movement of captives and freedmen between the village and the village, enabling their interaction with the wider society.
