ABSTRACT
This article aims to discuss the social presence of the ball game in Rio de Janeiro, between 1760's and 1850's, arguing that the subject allows us to cast a glance at the changes in the patterns of sociability and leisure in the city. The research frame considers the period that the game ball performed better structured and the decade that appeared reconfigured, before reducing its popularity until it was not more practiced in its original format. To reach the goal, as sources have been used several documents and newspapers and magazines published in the city in the nineteenth century.
