The formation of an army in Brazilian way: corporate disputes and institutional adaptation

The article is focused on the process of formation of the Brazilian Army from 1850 to 1930. It also seeks to discuss the development of analytical perspectives which are able to integrate, to the study of institutions and elites, the specific historical and cultural conditions from societies which are inserted. Thus, it aims to attune the discussions about the formation and rearrangement of Brazil's ruling groups, especially of bureaucratic elites or the State. The analysis seeks to resize elements of the dynamics of nation building as well as its social history (institution-building, social representations, formation of ruling elites, reconstitution of the disputes between groups). Finally, the work explores the relationship among the military, political and the intellectual spheres and the logics embedded in them in confrontations for clashes of power.
