The Legenda Beati Petri Gundisalvi: reflections on the relationship between the Order of Preachers, the Diocese of Tui and the hagiographic writing

ABSTRACT

The Legenda Beati Petri Gundisalvi (LBPG) presents the trajectory of the Dominican friar Pedro González, better known today by the name of Telmo. From the discussion of aspects related to the writing of this Vita, such as trans mission, content, dating and patronage, the main purpose of this article is to contribute to the study of the presence of the friars preachers in the diocese of Tui in the thirteenth century. Although it has been the aim of some studies, there are still many doubts about the LBPG´s production process. Moreover, given the docu mental lack of the mendicant presence in Gali cia in the thirteenth century, this text was not analyzed in order to relate its production to relations between the friars preachers, laymen and secular clergy in the peninsular Northwest in the first mendicant century. Throughout the article, I present arguments seeking to sustain that the composing of that hagiography is con nected to the relations established between the Cathedral, the Cabildo, the Concello and the Dominican friars in the Diocese of Tui in the mid-thirteenth century, what constitutes this work as a singular testimony.
