Auto-da-Fé for Borba Gato: Public historicities and historiographical keys

Abstract

This essay addresses the aggression on the Borba Gato monument in July 2021, in São Paulo, reconstructing the anthropological emergence of the image and the elaboration of others public historicities based on Afro-Atlantic traditions. The text crosses the temporal reconfigurations produced by the event with some reactions from the historiographic community, especially regarding the impact of the event on important conceptual resources: heritage, monument/document, and regime of historicity. It demonstrates that the iconoclastic operation perpetrated by the collective Peripheric Revolution challenges historiography to re-elaborate the notions through which she translates events that thematize, in a new way, the socially prevailing racism.
