Given the general theme that has been proposed - «representations of the male gender» - the subject of our paper is as a refuge, a sanctuary. Our perspective is to work from the concept of rei militaris, exclusive of the male gender, and from the representation of the king as a paradigm. King and kingdom form the same matter, built by the force of arms and guaranteed by the ultimate representation of royal power. The image of the medieval Portuguese king, full of future potential, contains within itself the model and substance stated in the long evolution from Ancient monarchies and empires.
