An adequate fun?: Bullfighting in the 19th century Rio de Janeiro (1870-1884)

This paper aims to discuss the resumption of the organization of bullfighting observed in Rio de Janeiro between the years 1876 and 1884. Centrally it is analyzed the debate about the adequacy of the practice, a process that ultimately led to a further prohibiting of the promotion of bullfights in the city. It is argued that the tensions around bullfighting events manifested some important questions of historical context. To reach the goal, sources such as newspapers published in the capital in the period displayed were used.
