“The El Dorado of the naturalists” - Scientific discourse and literary language in the Amazonian essays by Raimundo Morais

Abstract

This article examines the science-themed essays by writer Raimundo Morais, from Pará, Brazil, in order to understand the convergence between the literary discourse and the conveying of knowledge. At the same time, it aims at identifying methods he used in order to authenticate his work among Brazilian intelligentsia. Analytical and critical reading of his texts identified the following thematic axes: relativize scientific knowledge and defense the secularity of its production system.
