The Life of the Jura Fathers and the subsistence of the monks of Condat

Abstract

The Life of the Jura Fathers , written between 512 e 515, recounts the story of the monastery of Condat under the government of three abbots: Romanus, Lupicinus and Eugendus. My purpose in this article is to analyze the material development of Condat, paying particular attention to the monks' subsistence. Contrarily to what scholars suppose regarding monasteries in fourth- and fifth-century Gaul, I suggest that Condat was not economically autonomous. I consider, firstly, the monastery's maintenance expenses, and, secondly, how the monks paid them.
