The Military Modernization of Guzmán Blanco and the Coro Campaign in Venezuela (1847-1875)

Abstract

This work analyzes the military modernization of Antonio Guzmán Blanco through the operations of the Coro Campaign, northern Venezuela, between 1874 and 1875. The consultation of archival sources shows that there were introduced innovations in the General Staff, logistics and military health. In sum, the constitutional forces went from leading small divisions to permanent Army Corps, with a greater number and better endowment in organization and armament, which allowed Guzmán Blanco to consolidate in power for eighteen years (1870-1888).
