"Catholic, from the bottom of the heart!" One Wild Geese at Santo Ofício of Lisbon

This article investigates the inquisitorial process of the Irish Catholic, Robert Walters, who, after serving the English at Saint Christopher Island in the Caribbean, presented himself to the Santo Oficio of Lisbon in 1631. The youth, later to fight against the Dutch in Brazil, reflected on his chosen path with all the inherent contradictions concerning the religious feelings of his time, subjugated to the objectives of the national and mercantile politics of the Modern Era.
