In the shade of a master: Gilberto Freyre reader of Euclides da Cunha

This essay aims to establish a relationship between two active intellectuals in an important period of the Brazilian historiography during the first decades of the XX century: Euclides da Cunha and Gilberto Freyre. The guidelines of the text are the role of Freyre as a reader of Euclides da Cunha, analyzing how the work of the latter was received by the first. It is supported that the hypothesis of the making of the mentioned author's first book, Casa-Grande & Senzala (1933), was strongly marked by the characteristics of the greatest book by Euclides, Os sertões (1902).
